Corporal Harold G. Scharfe
On August 19, 1942, Harold Scharfe was taken prisoner in Dieppe, France, and joined 10,000 men behind barbed wire in Stalag VIIIB in Lamsdorf, Germany. Trained as a commando, he participated in one of the biggest blunders of World War II: The Dieppe Raid. The invasion, intended as a surprise, was the opposite. The men became fodder for the Germans who were positioned in cliffs overlooking the open beaches of Dieppe. With no cover, in nine hours 907 men lost their lives, and the rest were taken captive. The three-year imprisonment tested Harold's will and capacity to strategize and survive.
